What is (DEF) Diesel Exhaust Fluid?

Regulating the heat generated by an internal combustion engine is vital to optimizing performance and extending engine life. That’s why effective coolants and properly maintained cooling systems are critical to every heavy-duty fleet. The Antifreeze/Coolant product line includes:
  • Extended Life Prediluted 50/50 Coolant/Antifreeze, a 50/50 mixture of ELC concentrate and deionized water

  • Extender, the recommended recharge for extended service intervals when using ELC
DEF is made from 32.5% high purity urea and 67.5% DI water and is considered to be safe, non-toxic and environmentally friendly. When fueling the SCR equipped diesel engine, DEF is added to a separate tank on the vehicle. The DEF is consumed at a rate, approximately equivalent to, 2% of diesel fuel consumption and contributes to approximately 4% fuel economy savings of the vehicle. When the diesel engine is operating, the DEF is injected into the exhaust stream where it reacts with a catalyst to reduce the amount of nitrogen oxide emitted into the atmosphere, thereby protecting our environment.

What does DEF mean for drivers?
 
Vehicles equipped with an SCR system use sensors to determine that, in fact, DEF is in the system and not a liquid such as water. These vehicles also have other instrumentation such as gauges or warning lights as to alert the driver to the level of DEF in the vehicle. If the vehicle were to be run without a supply of DEF, the vehicle would enter into a ‘Limp Mode’ which would allow the vehicle to be safely driven to the nearest location to replenish the DEF. This ‘Limp Mode’ is similar to the familiar ‘Check Engine’ light familiar to most motorists. While in the ‘Limp Mode’, the diesel engine will not produce full-power and by limiting power and the vehicle will be limited to 5mph with inducement notification.

Lime


Product Summary

Atlantic Petroleum offers customers a variety of lime forms. The products listed below are available upon ordering:
  •      Hydrated Lime Slurry
  •      Hydrated Lime
  •      Quicklime
Quicklime

When lime is made from limestone through the burning process, the lime emerging from the kiln is cooled and crushed to size, usually to a pebble about ¾ inches in diameter. This “pebble lime” is called quicklime. Chemical equation/Reaction summary: CaCO3 (limestone) + heat (2000° Fahrenheit) = CaO (quicklime) + CO2 (carbon dioxide gas)

Hydrated Lime 

Quicklime is often converted to hydrated lime, chemically known as calcium hydroxide, by adding just the right amount of water to satisfy this chemical reaction. This product is a dry powder having less than 2% free moisture. Calcium hydroxide has a molecular weight of 74 and has many applications.

Chemical equation/Reaction summary: CaO + H2O (water) = Ca(OH)2 (hydrated lime)

Hydrated Lime Slurry 

The pebble lime (quicklime) and hydrated lime can be converted to lime slurry or “milk-of-lime” by adding an excess of water. This is useful when dusting during use is a problem as it renders a dust-free application. No manufacturing operations are required prior to use. Lime ties up heavy metal pollutants.

Atlantic Petroleum Lime slurry will be delivered from the plant near Pearland or Galena Park in Texas. The deliveries will be made in 5000 gallon tank trucks containing 50,000 lbs. of lime slurry. The trucks will deliver lime slurry that is about 40% solids and contains approximately 10 tons of dry solids. The purity of the solids portion will be 92% +/- 1% Ca (OH)2 (calcium hydroxide). 

Atlantic Petroleum asks for 72 hours notice for requested delivery times. Atlantic Petroleum can make a delivery any time during daylight hours, and deliveries are made 6 days a week.

Atlantic Petroleum is a member of the Dun and Bradstreet Credit Agencies. Our credit terms are net 21 days from date of delivery. Invoices unpaid after 21 days are subject to a service charge of 1.5% per month.
